King Fahd International Airport (KFIA) is the gateway to the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. It is located between the industrial city of Jubail and the residential cities of Al-Khobar and Dammam, and has a catchment population of over 4 million.
Passenger and cargo traffic grew at a compound annual growth rate of about 9% over the past 5 years, reaching 4.71 million passengers and 78,700 tons of cargo in 2008. In the first half of 2009, KFIA’s passenger traffic grew 7% over the same period last year. This outperforms neighbouring Bahrain Airport (-1%) and Dubai Airport (5%). As of 1 August 2009, KFIA serves 25 airlines, connecting Dammam to 56 cities with more than 850 weekly flights.
KFIA has stepped up route development efforts over the past few years, and has achieved international recognition as an up and rising airport in the Middle East. KFIA won the Middle East category of the 2010 Routes Airport Marketing Awards – Asia Region during the gala dinner at the 8th Routes Asia Conference held in Adelaide, Australia, edging out airports from Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and Sharjah for the award. KFIA also received the “Highly Commended Certificate Award” by OAG during the World Route Development Forum in Stockholm in 2007 for airports below 5 mppa, and the “Best Emerging Airport in the Middle East in 2006” by Middle East Logistics Award (MELA). These awards are testament to KFIA’s proactive approach to route development.
